The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa’s signature restaurant, deseo, has transformed into an art gallery, showcasing the work of Cuban artist and resort associate, Nelson Garcia-Miranda.
Addl. Info: Garcia, who works as a steward for the property, came to Phoenix in 1999 after seeking political exile from Cuba. Displacement has made him more aware of his cultural heritage which he depicts in his work in a style called, “cubanidad.”

Rich in color and complex in theme, Garcia-Miranda’s paintings embody the tales of the Cuban countryside, brining to visual representation fables and stories of cagüeiros (sorcerers who become animals), and güijes (Cuban goblins). His work is saturated with the exuberance of the tropics as his vibrant use of color may be read as visual representations of poly-rhythmic Cuban music, also conveying the forceful light of the Caribbean meridian.

It is entered through a typically Wrightian low ceiling, stone-walled space which opens to a 56-feet long by 34-feet wide room linked to the garden and bedroom wing by expansive windows. Commemorative Air Force Arizona Wing Aviation Museum will open a new exhibit titled “Triumph Over Adversity.” It is dedicated to the Black pioneers of aviation and to the offers and enlisted personnel of the Tuskegee Airmen who served during WWII.

Info: The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Arizona Wing Aviation Museum's exhibit titled “Triumph Over Adversity” is dedicated to the Black pioneers of aviation and to the officers and enlisted personnel of the Tuskegee Airmen who served during WWII. This is in recognition of the positive experience, the outstanding record of accomplishment and the superb behavior of all black airmen, especially those of the 91st Fighter Squadron, the 322nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group (collectively known as the Tuskegee Airmen) who were important factors in the initiation of social change to achieve racial equality in America.

Among the warbirds on display for the exhibit will be a reduced scale P-51”Mustang” and the museum’s B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey”, B-25 “Mitchell” Bomber, North American SNJ/T-6 “Texan”, Stearmans, and many more. Warbird rides and gift certificates are available for purchase. The museums gift shop offers unique aviation gifts for the entire family.
